Sam Ka Kei, a PhD student alongside Dr. Lau Nyok Sean, Prof. Alexander Chong Shu Chien and Indonesian collaborators Dr. Zainal Abidin Muchlisin and Dr. Rudy Agung Nugroho, have published a research titled “Complete Mitochondrial Genomes of Paedocypris micromegethes and Paedocypris carbunculus Reveal Conserved Gene Order and Phylogenetic Relationships of Miniaturized Cyprinids” in Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution. This paper reports on two complete mitochondrial genomes of the world’s smallest fish and vertebrate, P. micromegethes and P. carbunculus. The study highlighted the Paedocypris’s mitogenome features, comparative analyses with closely related species and phylogeny reconstruction. Mitogenomic information presented in the study provides a basis for population genetic, taxonomy and evolutionary biology of the miniature fish and related groups.
