Preliminary Brainstorming Session on Biomining Design Research & Development (R&D) at CCB
On 17 December 2025, the Centre for Chemical Biology (CCB) convened a preliminary brainstorming session on Biomining Design Research & Development (R&D) as an initial platform to explore ideas, scope potential research directions, and identify opportunities for future collaboration in the biomining field.
The session was conducted by Prof. Mohd Nazalan bin Najimudin, who led the discussion and facilitated early-stage idea sharing among participants. The objective of this preliminary meeting was to initiate dialogue on biomining concepts, outline possible design frameworks, and assess interdisciplinary contributions that could support subsequent research planning.
The discussion was further enriched by the participation of Associate Professor Dr. Mohamad Hekarl Uzir from the USM School of Chemical Engineering and Dr. Kamarul Zaman bin Zarkasi from the School of Biological Sciences, who shared initial perspectives from engineering and biological standpoints, respectively.
Also present were Datuk ChM. Dr. Omar Shawkataly, Pioneer and Co-Founder of CCB, and Dr. Mohd Ismail Mohd Ibrahim, former PPJJ Chemist. Their experience and institutional insight provided valuable context for aligning early biomining ideas with CCB’s research ecosystem and long-term aspirations.

Overall, the preliminary brainstorming session served as an important starting point for biomining discussions at CCB, laying the groundwork for more detailed technical deliberations, structured research planning, and future design and development initiatives.
