Visit from Universitas Teuku Umar (UTU), Indonesia to the Centre for Chemical Biology (CCB)

The Centre for Chemical Biology (CCB), Universiti Sains Malaysia, welcomed a delegation from Universitas Teuku Umar (UTU), Indonesia, comprising staff and lecturers from the Fakultas Perikanan dan Ilmu Kelautan (FPIK) on 4 November 2025. The visit aimed to strengthen academic collaboration, promote research exchange, and explore potential opportunities within the fields of fisheries and marine sciences.

The programme began with a warm welcome session, followed by an engaging knowledge-sharing segment. Dr. Lau Nyok Sean and Mrs. Noorizan from CCB presented their innovative diagnostic kit for detecting Vibrio species in fish and shrimps, highlighting its application in aquaculture health monitoring and disease management. The visitors were particularly interested in the translational potential of the kit for industry and research purposes.

The session also involved participation from CCB lecturers and experts from the School of Biological Sciences, including Dr. Faradina Merican Mohd Sidik Merican and Dr. Shuhaida Shuib, who contributed insights and discussed possibilities for future collaborations in marine biotechnology and aquatic pathology.

To provide a closer look at CCB’s research environment, the delegation was taken on a guided laboratory tour, where they were introduced to various research facilities, instruments, and ongoing scientific projects. The tour offered valuable exposure to CCB’s capabilities in molecular biology, microbiology, and chemical biology research.

The visit concluded with a group discussion focused on academic networking, joint research aspirations, and student mobility prospects. Both institutions expressed enthusiasm for establishing long-term cooperation that could benefit the development of fisheries and marine science education in the region.
