CCB USM Participates in the Sustainable Aquaculture Summit 2025
On 8th October 2025, the Centre for Chemical Biology (CCB), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) took part in the Sustainable Aquaculture Summit (SAS) 2025, held at the Eureka Complex, USM, Penang. The summit, organized by Leave a Nest Malaysia, brought together researchers, industry experts, and innovators to explore sustainable solutions and technologies for advancing the blue economy.
Representing CCB were Dr. Go Furasawa, Dr. Lau Nyok Sean and a postgraduate student, Ms Co-co. Their participation highlighted CCB’s active involvement in cutting-edge research and its commitment to promoting sustainable aquaculture practices.
During the event, the team presented their ongoing project titled “Discovery of a Novel Biocontrol Agent for Shrimp Disease.” The study focuses on identifying a new biological control mechanism against Vibrio parahaemolyticus (Vp), the bacterium responsible for shrimp disease outbreaks that severely affect aquaculture productivity.
In this project, Ms. Co-co, a member of the research team, successfully isolated a new bacterial predator from a coastal area in Penang. Remarkably, this isolate demonstrated vigorous killing activity against Vibrio parahaemolyticus, outperforming other known bacterial predators. The findings suggest a strong potential for developing this isolate as a novel biocontrol agent to combat Vp infections in shrimp culture systems.
CCB’s participation in SAS 2025 underscores its continuous effort to bridge academic research and real-world applications, fostering innovation that supports sustainable aquaculture and environmental resilience.
