                                                                                                 Green Office Sustainability Poster 1

On 2nd July 2025, an engaging and impactful event under the "Green Office: From Practice to Culture" program was successfully held at Centre for Chemical Biology (CCB), USM lobby. The program aimed to instil sustainable work habits and promote environmental consciousness among staff members, transforming green practices into part of the office culture. The day began with an opening speech by the Director, who emphasized the importance of sustainability and individual responsibility in combating environmental issues. A highlight of the event was the “Green Corner” exhibition, featuring indoor plants arranged by each CCB staff to encourage a healthier office environment. Overall, the program successfully fostered awareness and set a strong foundation for cultivating a long-term green office culture.

  • INTERNSHIP

create an image of student doing molecular lab work

The Centre for Chemical Biology (CCB) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is a leading multidisciplinary research institute dedicated to advancing knowledge at the interface of chemistry and biology. Since its establishment, CCB has served as a dynamic platform for cutting-edge research, collaboration, and innovation in molecular life sciences. The centre plays a pivotal role in strengthening Malaysia’s position in global biotechnology and biomedical research.

    Research Focus Areas

Research at CCB is organized into four major thematic areas, each spearheaded by a dedicated Principal Investigator and supported by a team of researchers and postgraduate students:

    • Genes and Genomes
    • Structural Biology
    • Chemical Biology
    • Environmental Microbiology

    Internship Opportunities

For undergraduate and postgraduate students interested in gaining hands-on experience, CCB offers research internships in its core research areas. Interns will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced scientists and contribute to ongoing research projects.

Interested candidates can apply via the official platform:

    Dinesh Balachandra, MSc
“I joined CCB to work on novel bacteria after pursuing my BSc from AIMST University. I found my true calling for research here. Through the guidance of my mentors, I have truly understood the underlying essence of research and what it takes to be a researcher.”

    tengku yasmin

    Dr. Tengku Yasmin, PhD
“After my MSc, I joined CCB to study a pair of proteins important for Salmonella to survive in harsh environments. CCB is a very conducive and comfortable place for doing research. I was glad to be given the freedom to think and design my own, sometimes weird, experiments.”

    jess

    Dr. Jess Loh, PhD
“I studied laticifer gene expression profiles of rubber tree to improve latex yield. I like CCB as it is a very clean and well-equipped place for research. I was pleased with the invaluable advice and guidance from my mentors. Besides study, I helped organise a bioinformatics workshop at CCB.”

Dr. Muhd Khairul Luqman Bin Muhd Sakaff , PhD
"I started my journey at CCB in June 2008 and ever since it has been a rewarding journey. Looking back at the past, the experience that I had in CCB thus far has shaped me into a better researcher, a refined person, a good team member and importantly a wiser and mature human being."

    Heng Wooi Liang, PhD

“The conducive environment at CCB has made research an enjoyable process. CCB is located far from the main campus, which allows me to fully immerse myself in research, away from the hustle and bustle of campus life. The lab is equipped with complete, well-maintained facilities, making research more efficient.”

    wil shenn1

    Oh Wil Shenn, PhD

“The equipment and research facilities provided by CCB have been sufficient for the research, but my best experience here in CCB is with the people here, who are friendly and have been very helpful whenever I have problems during my research.”

    chor1

    Ng Yong Chor, Msc

"The facilities are well-equipped and readily available for everyone, especially for molecular biology and microbiology research. CCB’s staff are highly efficient, professional, and friendly. I am fortunate to receive their support when handling required paperwork. I am grateful that my supervisor allowing us the freedom to think independently, develop our own ideas, and design our experiments.''

    kher ying1

    Khoo Kher Ying, MSc

“I was always interested in genetic engineering and how it can be used to modify organisms in specific ways. I also discovered that hands-on experiments in the laboratory were exciting and enjoyable. The lab environment at CCB is welcoming and collaborative, with helpful colleagues who openly share knowledge & work together to overcome experimental challenges.”

    coco1

    Saw Coco, MSc

"I am interested in setting my own goals and hitting each milestone makes me feel satisfied with my progress. I was also fascinated by the interactions between the microorganisms, especially predation. Hence, I decided to explore more about microbiology by pursuing my masters in CCB. The facilities here are well-equipped which allows me to try out many different biological protocols."

    Araniy Abdullah, Msc

“Although my work with bioinformatics is incredibly hard and I try to overcome it with limited help, I like CCB as it provides better facility for research. I like my supervisor a lot as he always tries to support me”
