Multi-cellular organisms rely on several Elovl elongase to convert polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) such as linolenic acid (C18:3n-3) to the all-important EPA and subsequently, DHA.  Depending on species, the Elovl5, Elovl2 and Elovl4 are the 3 families known to have PUFA-elongation capacities that contribute to the LC-PUFA biosynthesis pathway.  This present work involving researchers from Spain, Portugal and China proposed that a new Elovl family, the Elovl8 also possessed a similar elongation capacity.  Using the versatility of zebrafish-related tools, these researchers showed the capacity of saturated fatty acid and PUFA in two Elovl9 isoforms.
